Tadoba – Andhari is said to be the oldest park in Maharashtra and is a photographer’s paradise. Tiger safari enthusiasts vote Tadoba as the best place to view and photograph the wildlife in a diverse landscape.
The name Tadoba originates from the local deity, Tadoba or Taru who was once a revered chieftain in the region. According to legends, Tadoba valiantly fought a tiger in a fierce battle but unfortunately, he succumbed to his injuries. In honor of his bravery and sacrifice, the community erected a shrine dedicated to Tadoba, where community members offer prayers and pay homage to his memory. This shrine stands as a testament to the deep reverence and respect the locals hold for their courageous leader. The name Andhari is based on the river flowing through the reserve.
Tadoba, situated in the Chandrapur district of Maharashtra, mesmerizes visitors with its picturesque landscape adorned with expansive meadows, rolling hills, and serene lakes. This remarkable sanctuary serves as a habitat for a diverse array of wildlife, boasting an impressive count of 280 bird species, 54 reptile species, 11 amphibian species, and 84 fish species. The region’s abundant natural beauty and thriving biodiversity offer a captivating experience for nature enthusiasts and wildlife lovers alike.
The reserve is also home to a diversity of fauna with the prominent ones being; Teak, Mango, Jamun, Arjun, Haldu, Bija and Dahoda. Kolsa, Moharli and Tadoba, each offering fantastic and offers one of the best tiger safari in India.
Best Time To Visit Tadoba Andhari Tiger Reserve
The best time to visit any tiger reserve is October – June. However, wildlife enthusiasts consider planning a trip during the summer months, as the wildlife can be seen frequenting water bodies, especially during the months of March- May. Wildlife relaxing by, or drinking water can offer a great chance at clear photographs, or ample time to observe them in a more leisurely fashion, thereby helping understand animal behaviour and ecology as well. However, if you want to enjoy the forests and are not particularly focused on wildlife sightings alone, winter months of October – February are a great time to enjoy the landscape and bird life.
Geography
All tiger reserves have a core and buffer zone. While the core zone is reserved for the flora and fauna of the reserve to thrive devoid of human interference or habitation, the buffer consists of villages, human habitation and activities of agriculture etc.

Clothing
Clothing: Packing for a forest tour is usually easier than packing for a city do. Carry light cotton pants and t-shirts / shirts for summers, and pad up in multiple jackets/ sweaters gloves, socks and ear muffs during winters. Avoid flashy colours, perfumes, scented moisturisers or anything that stands out against the serene landscape and try to blend in as much as possible for a fantastic experience.
